The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that about 347,000 people in the U. S. have severe or persistent asthma, which accounts for about 25% of all asthma attacks. People with asthma often have other conditions that cause difficulty breathing.1

According to the CDC, about two out of five adults aged 18 and older have asthma.

Asthma is defined as the inflammation of the airways, usually triggered by an asthma attack. Asthma attacks occur in people who have not yet had their asthma fully resolved. Asthma attacks occur occasionally and last for several weeks.2

In people with asthma, wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath are often triggered by sudden attacks of asthma attacks. Asthma attacks typically last between six and 12 hours. In some cases, people with asthma may have had their asthma worse after a year of treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).3

If you have severe asthma, it is important that you get good control of your symptoms. Some people with asthma have a hard time breathing themselves.

For adults with asthma, ICS can be used as part of a maintenance protocol for asthma that includes exercise, adequate exercise, and symptom control.

Asthma attacks can be hard to treat. Most people who have asthma can manage the symptoms of their attacks with a simple, noninvasive procedure called rescue inhalation therapy (PIST).

If you have asthma, it is important that you get good control of your symptoms and get regular, over-the-counter (OTC) therapy (such as asthma medicine) as directed by your doctor.2
